Am I safe here?

On the first night a foster animal comes home, the house feels different. There’s a new rhythm, soft paws testing unfamiliar floors, a cautious nose at the edge of a doorway, a quiet question in the air: Am I safe here?

Here at RSPCA Southport, Ormskirk & District Animal Centre, fostering begins with moments like these every single day, and those moments change lives.

Our Centre works tirelessly to support cats and dogs who arrive through no fault of their own. Some come from neglect, some from difficult circumstances, others simply lost or abandoned. While our dedicated Animal Care Team provides the best possible care here at the Animal Centre, nothing compares to the calm and consistency that a home can offer.

That’s where foster careers step in, becoming a vital extension to the Centre.

When a foster career opens their home to an animal, they’re not just helping one cat or dog, they’re helping many. Each foster placement frees up a much needed space here at the Animal Centre, allowing us to take in another animal in need.

Your one act of kindness creates a ripple effect: a kennel opens, an emergency intake becomes possible, and another life gets a second chance.

Many arrive with emotional or physical trauma, overwhelmed by new sights, sounds, and smells. In a foster home, they can truly decompress. A nervous dog learns that hands can be gentle and routines can be trusted. A withdrawn cat discovers warm laps, quiet corners, and the confidence to explore again. These small steps are the foundation of rehabilitation, and they often make the difference between an animal just coping or thriving.

Foster careers are never alone on this journey. At the heart of our fostering network is Lily, our dedicated foster coordinator. Lily is on hand every step of the way offering guidance, reassurance, practical support, and a listening ear whenever it’s needed. Whether it’s advice on settling an anxious dog, help with medications, or simply checking in after a tough day, Lily ensures that every foster career feels supported, valued, and confident.

We understand that letting go can be hard. Saying goodbye always is. But knowing that an animal is ready for their forever home, stronger, calmer, and more confident because of the time spent with you, makes it worthwhile. Many of our foster careers go on to foster another animal, starting the cycle over once more.

At RSPCA Southport, Ormskirk & District Animal Centre, fostering is about community. It’s about people coming together to support their local rescue, to stand alongside animals on their journey from uncertainty to security.

It’s about creating space within the Centre, within homes, and within hearts all at the same time.

One foster home at a time, lives are being changed. Sometimes quietly. Sometimes messily. Always meaningfully.
